At First Central, we’re on the lookout for a Financial Accounting and Reporting Manager to join our multi-talented, fun, fresh and high-performing Finance team in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, Salford Quays, Manchester or Guernsey.

Leading the development and execution of First Central’s financial and regulatory accounting shared service function, you’ll develop a high-performing team of financial accountants to ensure continual progression and continuous improvement across the wider finance functions.

You’ll identify and implement changes to improve close process and accommodate business and commercial changes across the Group, with an agile approach to project management and an ability to rapidly react to changes in business priorities to take advantage of emerging business and customer opportunities.
Job responsibilities
  • Accountable for the operation and approach of the smooth and timely running of the monthly close cycle across the Group and operating entities
  • Accountable for the full preparation of the annual statutory and quarterly regulatory reporting obligations of the Group (excluding Solvency II)
  • Owner of the external audit engagement including relationship management, planning and ensuring the annual audit engagement is effective for the finance teams through to the Group board and subsidiary boards
  • Review and maintain controls in place for the preparation and integrity of the company’s direct and indirect tax returns
  • Review and provide recommendations to the board(s) for the Group and operating subsidiaries to comply with applicable accounting standards through design, and maintain the Group’s operating accounting policy/procedure
  • Establish, refine and continually improve the procedural framework in place for the month-end balance sheet review, ensure proportionate oversight and controls are in place based on financial and operational risk
  • Ensure adherence to the Group’s wider financial control framework, ensuring timely and accurate financial record keeping is maintained at all times
  • Maintain second line controls through reconciliation and maintaining audit trails to ensure proportionate safeguarding of the risk of fraud, error or omission
  • Ensure second line financial reconciliation activities are both efficient and effective across all operating subsidiaries
  • Management, coaching and feedback to direct reports to achieve KPIs and SLAs, as well as conduct regular performance reviews, including probationary reviews and annual appraisals, monitoring absence, conducting disciplinaries and assisting in the recruitment process
Skills, knowledge & experience
  • Qualified accountant with ACCA/ACA
  • Significant leadership of an accounting function within personal lines insurance and/or intermediary market
  • Proven experience in an accounting function across multiple tax and regulatory jurisdictions together with insurance accounting, IFRS or UK GAAP and knowledge of direct and indirect tax
  • Experience in growing and developing a finance team in a high growth business, allowing talent growth and operational stability within a professional services environment
  • Strong leadership capabilities with the ability to inspire and coach, from senior management to assistant level professionals
  • Strong communication, analytical and organisational skills,
  • Work effectively under pressure and think clearly and logically in challenging situations
  • Results driven with a constant eye on the detail and proven experience in delivering controlled change and rapidly overcome obstacles
