We’re on the hunt for a talented Legal Counsel to join our Legal team in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. You’ll support the smooth day to day running of the Group Legal function, assisting the Group Legal Director (GLD) and Senior Legal Counsel working in collaboration with other legal colleagues. Travel to other companies within the Group or other Group business sites in Guernsey, Gibraltar and Manchester may occasionally be required. 

Overseeing the maintenance of the Group’s Contracts Register, Intellectual Property and transaction records, you’ll be primarily responsible for advising stakeholders on legal matters and completing thorough research. Writing the quarterly ‘Legal Bulletin’ and ‘Claims Briefing’, you’ll support the GLD in drafting advice notes to the Group and its subsidiary companies.
To be successful in this role, you’ll need to:
  • Have experience of working as a lawyer in an in-house and/or private practice capacity
  • Be a qualified Lawyer (Solicitor or Barrister) or equivalent
  • Have knowledge of legal and/or corporate governance processes within a regulatory environment
Job responsibilities
  • To assist Group Legal Director and attending meetings from time to time as required
  • Conducting legal research and providing advice in a range of legal matters as and when requested by the different companies and departments, or as otherwise required
  • Maintain the Legal Calendar and the Legal Issues Register
  • Advise on regulatory issues, particularly FCA, Gibraltar Financial Services and Guernsey Financial servicers matters
  • Advise upon mattes of Company law
  • Review and draft a range of commercial contracts, give final legal sign off to contracts and assist in running contract checks for required contract updates, renewals or redrafting and implications following company change and development and assist in actioning those requirements
  • Assist in drafting insurance policy wordings for motor and ancillary policies
  • Assist in drafting company policies and procedures, and complete legal research to ensure they’re in line with legislation from the relevant jurisdictions
  • Liaise with the stakeholders for relevant documentation and completed Contract Proposal form and maintain an accessible filing system for these documents
  • Manage and maintain the companies’ County Court decisions log, liaise with the Courts for updates and information and ensure the relevant paperwork is completed for any litigation
  • Engage with the relevant departments to manage risks related to County Court Judgments, and work to reduce impact to credit rating reports
  • To handle Bailiffs in circumstances where they arrive, following the established procedure and communicate with the relevant departments required should this occur     
Skills, knowledge & experience
  • Qualified Lawyer (Solicitor or Barrister) or equivalent with experience gained in an in-house and/or private practice capacity
  • Experience of working in the general insurance industry or in commercial setting is preferable
  • Knowledge of legal and/or corporate governance processes
  • Experience of working in a regulatory environment
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (i.e. Companies Act, Data Protection Act, GDPR, FCA rules and Health and Safety at Work Act)
  • Knowledge of risk management techniques
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Problem-solving skills with the ability to translate problems and find resolutions
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Demonstrable legal research skills
  • Resilient to challenge from senior levels whilst building and maintaining relationships
  • Capacity and credibility to assess risk MI
